The third-generation Roewe RX5, which is currently on sale in China, serves as a major inspiration for the second-generation HS. This is clear from the common lighting units, greenhouse, and sheet metal profile. But the MG HS stands out thanks to its distinctive front bumper, which has a different grille and more aggressive air intakes.

The new MG HS is sized between the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V, measuring 4,655–4,670 mm (183.3–183.9 inches) in length and 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) in width. Furthermore, the new generation’s wheelbase has been expanded by 45 mm (1.8 inches) in comparison to its predecessor, measuring 2,765 mm (108.9 inches).

According to MG the new HS’s cabin offers more room inside, with five seats and a 507-liter (17.9 cubic foot) trunk space. Two 12.3-inch screens grace the dashboard, and a redesigned gear lever in the style of a shuttle is located on the middle console.

A wireless charging pad, an 8-speaker audio system, a 360-degree video, and the MG Pilot ADAS package are possible standard options, depending on the trim level.

The MG HS is still offered with a gasoline or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain, albeit the latter has undergone major improvements.

A 1.5-liter engine producing 141 horsepower (105 kW / 142 PS) is combined with a more potent electric motor producing 207 horsepower (154 kW / 209 PS) in the electrified arrangement. The MG HS can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 6.8 seconds with this setup. The larger 24.7 kWh battery pack, in particular, provides an impressive zero-emission range of up to 75 miles (121 km).

A 1.5-liter gasoline engine that is turbocharged and non-electrified powers the entry-level model, producing 275 Nm of torque and 168 horsepower (125 kW or 169 PS). The front wheels of this engine can be driven by a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Cost and accessibility

The ICE version of the MG HS costs £24,995 ($32,187), while the PHEV variant costs £31,495 ($40,557). First sales of the new small SUV are expected to start by the end of July, and orders for it are now being accepted in the UK.
