Two security patches were included in the most recent releases of macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and iOS 17.4.1 from Apple. The business has now provided a standalone upgrade for its own web browser, Safari, for customers using older versions of macOS. This update includes the same updates as macOS 14.4.1.
An Update for Safari is Available for Older macOS Versions
Safari 17.4.1 addresses a WebRTC vulnerability that permitted arbitrary code to be run when processing photos, as explained on Apple’s website. According to Apple, a “out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved input validation,” and they give Google Project Zero’s Nick Galloway credit for identifying and disclosing the exploit.
Since some Macs cannot be updated to macOS Sonoma, the most recent version of macOS, the standalone Safari update is available for Macs running macOS Monterey (version 12) and macOS Ventura (version 13).
In order to address the WebRTC vulnerability on specific iPhone and iPad models—such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X—that are not supported by iOS 17, Apple has also issued iOS 16.7.7. Keeping your devices updated is essential to protecting them from vulnerabilities such as this one.
Open the System Settings app, select the General option, and then select Software upgrade to upgrade Safari on your Mac. Click Update Now after your Mac has found the available update. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update on an iOS device to update. Note that not all outdated hardware receives security updates.
