Inside Out 2 by Disney/Pixar began tracking this morning, and based on insider information, it is expected to be the greatest opening at the American box office of the year, surpassing Dune Part Two ($82.5M) and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire ($80M) by a margin of $80 million to $85 million over the course of three days. Opening over the tried-and-true Fathers Day weekend of June 14–16 at Pixar is Inside Out 2.
That represents a significant return for Pixar in the post-Covid era, coming after the successful opening weekends of Elemental ($29.6M) from last summer and Lightyear ($50.5M) from 2022.
The movie Inside Out is popular among moms and teenage girls. The 2015 movie’s sequel, which opened at $90.4M domestically and ended at $356.9M domestically and $858.8M worldwide, puts viewers back in the head of Riley, who is now a teenager, as her emotions struggle to keep up with her newfound emotions. Riley is portrayed by Kensington Tallman. Riley’s feelings of Joy (Poehler), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) are still present in her mind, but the sequel introduces two new, potentially problematic emotions: envy (Ayo Edebiri) and anxiety (Maya Hawke).
Exhibitors at CinemaCon in April were treated to a hilarious preview of the first thirty-five minutes of Inside Out 2. It’s a huge improvement over the first film.
The Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to the first Inside Out. Kelsey Mann is the director of Inside Out 2.
