Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria defeated Ronit Karki of the United States 6-2, 6-3 in Sunday’s Wimbledon juniors final to win his maiden Grand Slam championship.
After Grigor Dimitrov in 2008, the 16-year-old Ivanov became the second Bulgarian to win the title.
He concluded with 22 wins, compared to his opponent’s six, and never faced a break point against Karki. He just dropped three points on his opening serve in the second set.
“I was feeling my serve very well today,” Ivanov said. “Probably my best weapon today.”
With the triumph, Ivanov will have the opportunity to join women’s champion Iga Swiatek and men’s singles champion Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon’s prestigious Champions Dinner.
But first, he needs to locate an appropriate outfit for the black-tie occasion.
“Right now we’re dealing with it (the outfit),” he said. “I didn’t expect I’m going to win. So that’s a good problem.”
Since Noah Rubin in 2014, Karki was attempting to become the first qualifier to win the title.
