After the success of models like the Innova and Fortuner, Toyota has broadened its reach in India by introducing the Hyryder and vehicles sourced from Maruti. Now, the company is reportedly eyeing a new segment that will compete with Mahindra’s Thar Roxx and Scorpio, positioning this new SUV as a smaller version of the Fortuner.

Mahindra currently holds a strong position in the mid-size SUV market with the Thar, Scorpio, and Scorpio N. Toyota is preparing to challenge these models with a single, rugged vehicle that will likely feature a monocoque design and sit below the Fortuner in its lineup.

At present, Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder serves as a monocoque SUV with all-wheel drive (AWD). There have been rumors about a larger, seven-seater version of the Hyryder, as well as Maruti’s Grand Vitara, expected to launch next year. While it would be logical to think that Toyota’s new SUV might be a larger Hyryder, reports indicate that the automaker is developing an entirely new platform for this off-road vehicle. This new platform won’t be based on the TNGA platform used for the Innova Hycross but will be versatile enough to support different body styles and powertrains, potentially spawning several new models.

The design of this SUV is expected to resemble the Fortuner, giving it the appearance of a mini version of the popular full-size SUV rather than a larger Hyryder. This new model will compete directly with the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Scorpio N, along with other lifestyle-oriented SUVs expected to enter the market soon.

Built on a monocoque platform, the Mini Fortuner is likely to offer a balance of handling and fuel efficiency. It’s rumored to feature the same 2.0-liter petrol engine and petrol-electric hybrid option as the Innova Hycross. Interestingly, a diesel variant, which is popular among off-roading enthusiasts, may not be part of the lineup, making it intriguing to see how the market responds to this decision.

The development of a Mini Fortuner is not just about the size or segment but also pricing. When the Fortuner was first introduced in 2009, it had a starting price of Rs 18.45 lakh. By 2024, the Fortuner’s base price has risen to Rs 33.43 lakh, with the top-end GR-S variant nearing Rs 65 lakh in some states like Karnataka. With prices continuing to rise, Toyota aims to offer a more affordable option in the Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh range, providing an attractive choice for those looking for a rugged, mid-size SUV.
