Hyundai recalled 90,000 Genesis-branded vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2019 this week due to a fire hazard with many of its sedans. Hyundai Genesis cars from 2015 to 2016 as well as the G90, G80, and 2019 Genesis G70 models are all included in the recall.
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing states that the starting solenoid’s corrosion from water is what causes the issue. Hyundai states that this “may result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving” if it leads to an electrical short. In the event that the short does start a fire, it may then spread to the engine compartment of the vehicle and eventually spread throughout the remainder of it.
According to the filing, the brand intends to address the problem by adding a remedy relay kit to the affected vehicles’ engine junction boxes. Owners are being instructed to keep their automobiles away from potentially combustible structures until the recall fix is finished as a precaution to prevent a car fire from spreading to a house fire.
It’s unclear if any of the few “thermal incidents” that Hyundai claims have happened as a result of the problem have progressed into real car fires. Although none of those incidents are known to have resulted in collisions or injuries, it is obvious that there could be a fire risk under a car’s hood. Any owner of a Genesis vehicle that is susceptible should contact the recall team as soon as possible.
