Apple appears to be doubling down on artificial intelligence once again, with reports suggesting a major overhaul of its Health app, incorporating an advanced ‘AI doctor’ service. According to Bloomberg, this move aligns with CEO Tim Cook’s long-standing vision of making healthcare Apple’s most significant contribution to humanity. Back in 2019, Cook had stated that when looking back, Apple’s greatest impact on mankind would likely be in the realm of health.
Renowned tech insider Mark Gurman reports that while Apple’s ambitious project of integrating a non-invasive glucose monitor into the Apple Watch is still years away, the company is focusing on leveraging AI to enhance the overall well-being of its users. The initiative, reportedly called Project Mulberry, is expected to revolutionize the Apple Health app by incorporating an AI-powered health coach. This feature is designed to mimic some of the analytical capabilities of a real doctor, offering users tailored health insights.
The revamped Health app is expected to integrate data from various Apple devices, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, and even third-party products, providing a holistic approach to tracking personal health. With the AI agent analyzing this data, users will receive personalized recommendations aimed at improving their well-being. Apple is reportedly training this AI using input from in-house doctors, with plans to collaborate with external medical professionals to refine its capabilities.
Additionally, the company is working on setting up a facility near Oakland, California, where doctors will create video content for the Health app. Apple is also looking for a charismatic medical expert to serve as the face of this new initiative, potentially to create a more human-centered experience similar to how tech companies like Google and OpenAI have utilized human artists for chatbot voices.
The project is said to be a top priority for Sumbul Desai, who leads Apple’s health team, and Jeff Williams, the company’s chief operating officer, is also deeply involved. According to Gurman, development is progressing rapidly, and the upgraded Health app could make its debut as part of iOS 19.4. Apple’s iOS 19 is set to be announced at the WWDC 2025 event in June, with a stable release expected alongside the iPhone 17 in September. With iOS 18.4 set to roll out on April 1, if everything proceeds as planned, Apple’s AI-powered doctor could be available around the same time next year.
