Ambani appointed for five years as Reliance Industries’ executive director

Anant Ambani is set to become the Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), with the company’s Board of Directors approving his appointment for a five-year term starting May 1, 2025. Presently a Non-Executive Director, Anant’s transition into an executive role marks a significant step in Reliance’s broader succession strategy. However, the appointment will still require the approval of the company’s shareholders.

Currently, Anant Ambani is deeply involved in Reliance’s energy and sustainability efforts, crucial areas where the company is aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. His contributions span initiatives focused on clean fuel production, carbon capture technology development, advancing circular materials, and boosting crude-to-chemicals conversion processes.

Since March 2020, Anant has been a Board member of Jio Platforms Limited and joined the boards of Reliance New Energy Limited and Reliance New Solar Energy Limited in June 2021. In May 2022, he was also appointed to the Board of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited. Additionally, since September 2022, he has served on the board of Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic division of Reliance Industries. Anant is a graduate of Brown University and has steadily expanded his involvement across key areas of the conglomerate.

This new role makes Anant the first among his siblings to be appointed as an Executive Director at Reliance Industries. His brother Akash Ambani has been serving as Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the group’s telecom arm, since 2022, while their sister, Isha Ambani Piramal, has been leading the company’s retail business operations.

During Anant’s appointment to the RIL board in 2023, the domestic advisory firm Institutional Investor Advisory Services (IiAS) recommended shareholders oppose the move, pointing to his age-28 years-as not meeting its internal guidelines. Despite this, the Reliance board has consistently expressed strong confidence in Anant Ambani’s leadership capabilities.
