A new line of A5 and S5 cars with a variety of moderately electric drivetrains was unveiled by Audi. The new A5/S5, which comes in Sedan and Avant bodystyles, replaces the ICE-powered A4/S4, which was introduced as a two-door Coupe and Cabriolet.
By designating even numbers for electric vehicles and odd numbers for gasoline-powered models, this tactical change simplifies Audi’s naming scheme. The A5 Sportback is essentially replaced by the new model, which also includes the A4 Sedan and Avant. The A5 Sedan now has five doors, including a useful tailgate.
Sharper detailing and improved proportions are hallmarks of the more dynamic appearance that has been introduced with the A5 name.
The expanded fenders give the car an aggressive attitude, and the ultra-satisfactorily huge bumper intakes—which wouldn’t seem out of place on a high-performance Audi Sport model—sit between sleeker LED headlights and a smaller grille are further highlights. Moreover, the taillights receive a technological boost with dazzling OLEDs.
The upgraded MLB Evo (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) platform is now powered by the new PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture, which is used in the first production vehicle, the Audi A5. Compared to its predecessor, it has a longer wheelbase, measuring 2,900 mm (114.2 inches). This corresponds to an extra 2.7 inches, or 68 mm, of space between the axles.
The brand-new A5 welcomes you with a completely updated interior. Audi is moving away from a cluttered array of buttons in favor of a sleek, elegant look that is loaded with amenities that elevate the A5 even higher into the luxury segment.
The centerpiece is a technological marvel called the curved panoramic display, which combines an enormous 14.5-inch touchscreen for the Audi MMI infotainment system with an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster. While an available 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger adds a touch of luxury and can keep them entertained on long drives, an improved head-up display helps you focus on the road. Additionally, comfort is prioritized, with Audi offering greater interior room than ever.
A New Mild Hybrid System
For the time being at least, the A5 sticks with its reliable 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine instead of going fully electric. To extract greater efficiency, this workhorse receives an upgrade that includes a variable-geometry turbocharger (VTG) and modified combustion. There are two different power options available in Europe: 148 horsepower (110 kW / 150 PS) for the front-wheel drive model and 201 horsepower (150 kW / 204 PS) for the quattro.
With the new 48-Volt MHEV + system, the revised 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel is the second alternative available in Europe and other select regions. A new 48-volt mild-hybrid system (MHEV plus) helps this oil burner reduce pollution. The electric motor adds a pleasant 24 horsepower (18 kW / 24 PS) to the standard engine’s strong 201 horsepower (150 kW / 204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.
Better fuel economy and quicker acceleration are the results of this. A dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel drive are the available drivetrain combinations for the mild hybrid TDI.
Increased Power for the S5
The S5 increases the stakes with an upgraded 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine for individuals who are looking for extreme thrills. With 362 horsepower (270 kW / 367 PS), this powerhouse also receives the MHEV plus mild hybrid treatment. This is 13 horsepower more than the S4 and S5 that were previously available. A smooth-shifting S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission distributes all that power to all four wheels, and Audi’s quattro sport differential with torque vectoring guarantees that you can corner confidently.
Audi says that “more precise” and “largely neutral handling” are the outcomes of the revised suspension and steering configuration. The optional adaptive suspension is said to offer a wider spectrum of performance, from comfort to sportiness, for enthusiasts looking for more.
Later this month, in Europe, orders for the new Audi A5 and S5 family will be accepted before the first deliveries take place in November. The Audi A5 Sedan will start at €45,200 ($49,279) in Germany.
