Citroen India has officially announced the launch date for the Basalt SUV coupe, set for August 2, 2024. This new model will directly compete with the forthcoming Tata Curvv ICE, which is scheduled to be unveiled in its production form tomorrow and will hit the market next month. The Basalt, initially introduced through the Basalt Vision concept, will be heavily localised for the Indian market.

Positioned above the C3 Aircross, the Basalt will utilize the CMP architecture, which already supports the C3 Aircross midsize SUV and the C3 compact hatchback. Series production of the Basalt has already begun at Citroen’s manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. An electric version of the Basalt is also anticipated in the future.

The five-seater Basalt will be more premium than the C3 Aircross, with expected starting prices around Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom). While the C3 and C3 Aircross have faced criticism for lacking certain features and technologies despite being competitively priced and capable within their segments, the Basalt is expected to come better equipped.

Performance-wise, the Basalt will feature the same 1.2L three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine found in the C3 Aircross, delivering a maximum power output of 110 PS and up to 205 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission, with an optional six-speed torque converter automatic unit available.

The Basalt’s exterior will showcase Citroen’s distinctive quirky styling, popular in Europe and other international markets, including a twin-slat front grille, squared-off wheel arches, wraparound LED tail lights, and a raised tail section. The interior will feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a fully digital instrument console, wireless smartphone charging, automatic climate control, multiple airbags, and more.

The introduction of the Basalt and Tata Curvv ICE marks the emergence of a new midsize SUV coupe segment. It will be interesting to see the development of this segment, especially as more models, including electric vehicles, are anticipated in the pipeline.
