The new Tharu XR SUV from Volkswagen has been unveiled for the Chinese market. Between the larger Tharu marketed in China and the smaller T-Cross is the new Volkswagen Tharu XR. However, Indian readers would recognize this as a slightly longer Volkswagen Taigun with updated front and rear appearance. The MQB A0 platform, which powers a number of vehicles like the VW Taigun and Virtus as well as the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia, provides the foundation for the Tharu XR.
What sets the Volkswagen Tharu XR apart from the Taigun?
The new Volkswagen Tharu XR has the same 2,651 mm wheelbase as the Taigun. However, with an overall length of 4,355 mm, the variant made specifically for China is approximately 134 mm longer. With a slightly sloping rear window tailgate and a wider rear overhang following the rear wheel, the extra length is visible in profile.
The Volkswagen Tharu XR borrows style influences from the new Tiguan L Pro, which is available in China, to give it a more modern appearance. With the LED DRL spanning the width of the face, the new LED headlamps provide a more fashionable appearance. Transparent lenses with a central light bar connecting to both units are used on the wraparound taillights. The brushed aluminum-finished plastics on the back bumper are larger as well.
Volkswagen specifications for the Tharu XR
The 1.5-liter TSI petrol engine, which comes in various outputs—the top option delivering 158 horsepower and 250 Nm of peak torque—will power the Tharu XR. The DSG automatic transmission will supply power to the front wheels, while a manual transmission will probably also available. With the exception of minor visual variations, VW China has not yet revealed the Tharu XR’s cabin layout and features. It is anticipated that these will be similar to those of the India-spec Taigun. Owing to its extra length, the SUV may have a larger cargo than the 385-liter Taigun built for India.
Currently, SAIC-Volkswagen’s Tharu XR is only expected to be released in China. Volkswagen India is not expected to bring the XR to this region.
