Even after more than eight years since its release, Dangal remains the highest-grossing Indian film of all time, firmly establishing Aamir Khan’s dominance at the box office. However, the past few years have been tough for him, with his most recent films facing harsh criticism and ultimately failing to perform commercially. Renowned for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, where he dedicates years to a single project, Aamir recently spoke about the emotional challenges he faced after these setbacks.

Addressing the impact of his recent failures, Aamir acknowledged that he finds it difficult to cope whenever one of his films doesn’t succeed, but Laal Singh Chaddha’s underperformance was particularly devastating. In an interaction with ABP Majha, he expressed, “I was deeply affected. I am someone who feels things very intensely.” Speaking about Thugs of Hindostan, he admitted that the film did not meet expectations. “Filmmaking is an intricate art, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, the final product doesn’t match our vision,” he explained.

Reflecting on his portrayal in Laal Singh Chaddha, an adaptation of the 1994 classic Forrest Gump, Aamir acknowledged that his performance may have been overly dramatic. “That movie only succeeded because of the lead character’s performance. Tom Hanks was brilliant in the original, completely immersing the audience in his journey. I wasn’t able to achieve that same effect,” he admitted.

Shedding light on how he processes failure, Aamir shared that he gives himself time to grieve before moving forward. “Whenever a film of mine doesn’t do well, I go into a phase of sadness and cry for two to three weeks. It’s important to mourn. After that, I gather my team to carefully analyze where we went wrong so that we don’t repeat the same mistakes. I believe failures have immense value, and I take them as opportunities to learn and grow,” he elaborated, adding that setbacks ultimately fuel his drive to improve.

During this challenging period, his family played a crucial role in offering emotional support. “With Thugs of Hindostan, my family already sensed that I wasn’t completely confident about the project. But with Laal Singh Chaddha, they knew how emotionally invested I was. When it failed, they made a conscious effort to be there for me. Junaid would drop by in the evenings just to check on me, sometimes Ira would come over. Even Reena, Kiran, and my mother frequently reached out. At one point, I joked that if every failure brought me this much love and attention, maybe I should have had a few more,” he said with a smile.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs of Hindostan starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Fatima Sana Shaikh and was produced by Yash Raj Films. Laal Singh Chaddha, directed by Advait Chandan, featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, Mona Singh, and Manav Vij, and was co-produced by Paramount Pictures, Aamir Khan Productions, and Viacom18 Studios.
