Reviving the Capri name from one of their classic coupes from the 1970s, Ford has presented a new electric crossover. The all-electric Explorer SUV and the Ford Capri SUV will share the same MEB platform. The crossover will be produced at Ford’s Cologne, Germany, facility.
It is worth noting that the first Ford Capri fastback coupe was manufactured in Cologne. Originally designed by Ford as a European Mustang, the coupe sold 400,000 units in its first two years of sales following its 1969 introduction. Similar to the original coupe, it is anticipated that the SUV would not be offered outside of Europe.
The Capri will be available in two trim levels from Ford: “Capri PREMIUM” and “standard Capri.” Additionally, two independent powertrains are offered; nonetheless, they are both referred to as Extended Range. With just one motor, the Extended Range RWD is said to have a driving range of 627 kilometers and a power output of about 282 horsepower. With its two electric motors, the Extended Range AWD can produce about 335 horsepower and has a driving range of 592 kilometers.
Ford Capri: Inside and technological aspects
Many standard features, like an adjustable infotainment screen, keyless entry and start, and heated front seats with memory and massaging function, are included with the Ford Capri to improve driver and passenger convenience.
One of the larger attractions of the Capri’s interior is its 14.6-inch center infotainment display, which Ford claims can be pushed up and down to change the viewing angle and disclose a hidden space called “My Private Locker”. Underneath the front armrest is another concealed container that Ford calls the MegaConsole, which has a 17-liter capacity. In addition to the MegaConsole, the Ford Capri has a convenient foldable boot floor and 572 liters of boot space.
In addition to standard features like a heated steering wheel, the car also has a wireless charging slot and supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay through the infotainment system. Customers who choose the Capri PREMIUM model get access to options like a hands-free tailgate, ten-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, adjustable ambient interior lighting, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
Ford Capri: Performance and safety
Together with the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which is powered by 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 cameras, and 3 radars, the Ford Capri will also include a slew of standard safety features. Features including lane departure warning, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance assistance are provided by the ADAS. Although blind spot alerts come equipped as standard, Ford will also be selling a Driver Assist Pack that includes more lane-keeping assistance, a 360-degree camera, and a heads-up display.
The lithium-ion batteries for the Extended Range RWD and AWD have a capacity of 77 kWh and 79 kWh, respectively. The Capri can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes using the 135 kW DC fast-charger in the RWD, which takes two minutes less than the 185 kW charger used by the Capri AWD. With the RWD drivetrain, the Ford Capri can reach 100 mph in 6.4 seconds, while the AWD version can reach the same speed in 5.3 seconds. Ford has not yet disclosed the Capri’s pricing, although it is anticipated to cost roughly $50,000 (₹41.8 lakh), placing it above the Explorer EV.
