Prior to the 2024 Monaco E-Prix, Formula E unveiled a revised and faster iteration of its electric race car.
The current Gen 3 model, which was unveiled for Season 9, will be replaced by the Gen 3 Evo in Season 11, which begins later this year and extends through 2025. All Formula E teams will still be required to utilize the same chassis design, but they will be able to create their own powertrains—which will also need to be re-homologated—for Season 11.
According to organizers, Formula E estimates that the Gen 3 Evo will reach 60 mph in 1.82 seconds, which is 36% faster than the current Gen 3 car and 30% faster than the current Formula 1 cars. According to Formula E calculations, the new car should also record lap times at the Monaco street circuit that are on average 0.2 seconds faster. The top speed of 200 mph remains the same.
All-wheel drive is also included in the Gen 3 Evo, but it will only be used in qualification, race starts, and when drivers activate Attack Mode, which gives them a brief performance boost for entering certain off-track zones.
The cars also receive new Hankook iON tires, which offer 5–10% more grip than the original rubber, and a new body kit that Formula E claims has improved aerodynamic qualities over the previous bodywork. In addition, these tires have 35% recycled and sustainable content, which is 9% more than the current Gen 3 tires.
Seasons 11 and 12 will see the Gen 3 Evo race, while Season 13 will see the introduction of a brand-new Gen 4 vehicle.
Jaguar followed Nissan this week as the first automaker to pledge allegiance to the Gen 4 era, which began in March. That means that until at least 2030, both automakers will remain in Formula E. In the meantime, renowned race car builder Lola Cars, in collaboration with Yamaha, will field a squad for Season 11.
