A US-based aerospace firm recently revealed the final design for Haven-1, set to become the world’s first commercial space station. While its exterior resembles other space stations, the interior is where it truly stands out, featuring a minimalist yet elegant design that rivals the ambiance of a 5-star hotel. The sleek, visually appealing decor and strategically placed lighting throughout the station make it a marvel of modern design.
NASA astronaut Andrew Feustel, who spent over 225 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), played a key advisory role in the development of Haven-1. He shared his insights, stating, “Having flown three missions to space, we’ve been able to draw on those experiences to create a space station designed for both work and living. Everything, from communication to personal spaces and crew interactions, has been crafted with astronauts’ needs at the forefront.”
The aerospace company, Vast, has partnered with SpaceX to transport passengers to the space station using SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. After docking, visitors will step into the station’s beautifully designed compact interior, which includes real-time displays for station status, lighting, and temperature controls. Essential supplies are stored efficiently thanks to optimised cargo compartments, while the rooms feature padded surfaces made of soft but durable materials for added safety. The space station also incorporates fire-resistant maple wood veneer slats, enhancing the station’s aesthetic warmth.
Private crew quarters offer astronauts more space than on the ISS, providing them with areas for rest, entertainment, and communication with family. Vast has also developed a unique sleep system, around the size of a queen bed, designed to offer customised pressure and support for a comfortable rest in space. Internet access will be provided by SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, ensuring connectivity with Earth.
The station includes a gathering area with a 1.1-meter domed window offering stunning views of Earth. The space also features a foldable multi-use table that can be used for dining or work, adding to the station’s functionality.
Haven-1 also addresses the physical demands of space travel, providing facilities for exercise to help passengers adapt to low-gravity conditions and maintain their bone and cardiovascular health. The station’s common area is equipped with anchors for customised workout routines to target muscle and bone fitness.
Beyond being a luxurious space suite, Haven-1 will serve as a research hub, with dedicated lab spaces for scientific experiments. Founded by Jed McCaleb in 2021, Vast aims to launch Haven-1 in 2025, with plans for more ambitious stations featuring artificial gravity by the 2030s.
