Hexagon Purus and Hino Trucks announced the creation of Tern, a dedicated zero-emission truck brand, and its first model, the RC8, a battery-electric Class 8 tractor, following in the footsteps of other OEMs.
The new Tern trucks, which will be produced at Hexagon Purus’ new facility in Dallas, Texas, were created to help fleets make the switch to electric vehicles. The Tern RC8, which is expected to go into serial production in late 2024, is constructed using Hino’s XL Series 4×2 chassis and is outfitted with Dana’s e-Axle and Hexagon Purus’ zero-emission technology.
“Tern RC8 delivers the comfort, reliability and safety that drivers and fleets want, and it’s purpose-built to be a very practical truck for operators integrating zero-emission trucks into their fleets,” said Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus. “We are excited to introduce a truck that embodies the endurance and efficiency of the Arctic Tern, renowned for its light weight and long migratory journey – a trusty companion you can always rely on.”
The Tern RC8’s Salient Characteristics are:
- A fully battery-electric platform featuring a 165-inch short wheelbase, which leads the industry
- 95 percent of use cases are addressed by a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 68,000 pounds, which is intended for applications involving 200 miles or more in regional city duty cycles.
- For specific duty cycles, two Hexagon Purus Gen3 269kWh battery packs in a 750-volt, 538-kWh configuration offer significant power and range.
- A 241 kW rate of recharge
- a maximum/constant 494 horsepower
- Maximum force of 38,350 ft/lbs.
“Our partnership with Hexagon Purus introduces a highly reliable Class 8, 4×2 tractor option into the electric truck market, catering to a wide range of applications. We are excited to see Tern launched in California, where fleet electrification is imperative,” said Glenn Ellis, president of Hino Trucks.
With the help of Hino’s network, Tern trucks will be solely offered through the Tern dealer network, guaranteeing complete support and servicing.
