There is an interesting surprise in store for fans who are excitedly awaiting the OTT release of Munjya, the newest horror-comedy from the Maddock Supernatural Universe. Munjya will first air on Star Gold on August 24, 2024, at 8 PM, before making its streaming debut on Disney+ Hotstar. This unorthodox approach gives moviegoers an opportunity to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes before it’s released digitally.
Munjya Plot: A Story Rooted in Folklore
Munjya takes inspiration from the rich Konkan culture of Maharashtra. In the movie, Abhay Verma’s character Bittu gets embroiled with the malevolent ghost Munjya from the 1950s. After performing a forbidden love ritual and dying tragically, Munjya, a young Brahmin lad, now haunts a peepal tree and aspires to marry Bittu’s love interest, Bela, played by Sharvari.
DNEG’s sophisticated computer-generated imagery (CGI) gives Munjya a distinct mix of humor and terror. Screenwriter Niren Bhatt said in an interview that Munjya is an immature and playful spirit rather than a wicked one. This contradiction gives the story of the movie depth and makes it both charming and terrifying.
Cast and Crew of Munjya
Munjya has an excellent ensemble cast that includes Mona Singh as Bittu’s protective mother Pammi and Sathyaraj as the exorcist Elvis Karim Prabhakar in addition to Abhay Verma and Sharvari. The story’s rich tapestry is enhanced by Suhas Joshi’s portrayal of Bittu’s grandma Gita and Bhagyashree Limaye’s appearance as Rukku.
The film’s soundtrack, written by Sachin-Jigar and Justin Varghese, combines humor and spookiness to great effect, and Saurabh Goswami’s photography effectively conveys the spirit of the haunted locations. A notable aspect that contributes to the film’s distinct charm are the visual effects, which accounted for half of the expenditure.
Munjya Television Launch
Munjya’s strategic decision to debut on television prior to its OTT release was made with the intention of drawing in a larger audience. According to a Maddock Films representative, “premiering on TV allows us to reach viewers who may have missed the theatrical release, offering them a chance to enjoy the film at no additional cost.” This action also heightens the excitement for its eventual Disney+ Hotstar release, where strong streaming figures are anticipated.
