The NHTSA Autopilot recall’s “fix” and the release notes describing the new Autopilot nag are included in the software update that Tesla has begun to distribute.
All Tesla cars with Autopilot in North America are subject to a new “safety recall” that was announced earlier this week by Tesla and the NHTSA.
The NHTSA’s years-long investigation into incidents involving Tesla cars operating on autopilot into stopped emergency vehicles on the highway comes to an end with the recall.
Once again, an over-the-air software update provides the “fix” for the “recall.”
It seemed that Tesla only intended to offer more warnings and alerts while drivers are utilizing the Autopilot capabilities, based on the defect notice that was made public earlier this week through the NHTSA.
Now that Tesla is beginning to distribute the updates, the release notes have been obtained by Not A Tesla App, which keeps track of software changes for Tesla:
Tesla is updating Autosteer in compliance with a recent recall (campaign #23V-838 for the US and #2023-657 for Canada):
- Increased font size and more prominent placement of the notifications for driver monitoring warning warnings on the touchscreen (available only on Models 3 and Y).
- To make activation and disengagement easier, an option to enable Autopilot functions with a single stalk depression rather than two has been included.
- Tightened the rules regarding drivers’ alertness when using Autosteer and approaching stop signs and traffic lights off-highway.
- Added a Suspension Policy that prohibits the use of Autosteer for a week in the event that improper use is found. When you or another driver in your car has five “Forced Autopilot Disengagements,” it is considered improper usage.
The driver is you. In order to ensure safety, it is your responsibility as the driver to pay attention to the road, keep your hands on the wheel, and be prepared to act.
Owners in North America are currently receiving the update, but it might take some time for it to reach the entire fleet.
Everything looks pretty decent.
