Co-founder of Wakefit, a Bengaluru-based startup, Chaitanya Ramalingegowda, offered his opinions on the long-running discussion around the 70-hour work week, which was started by Narayana Murthy. Though not at work, he thinks that everyone “should put in 70 hours every week for maximum productivity.” Instead, he recommends that in order to be well-rested and capable of giving their best work, people should sleep for 70 hours a week.
Ramalingegowda discussed his thoughts on Narayana Murthy’s “70-hour work week” comment in a post on LinkedIn. Seventy hours a week. Wakefit has been monitoring this discussion for some time. He shared a video on X and said, “Today seems like a good time to share our views, with the start of a new financial year and appraisal season in full gear.”
“Really, it is not asking for much,” he continued, adding that India “needs the 70-hour contribution from every team member year after year.”
Since it was shared on LinkedIn, the post has gotten over 600 reactions and a ton of comments.

Comment on Narayana Murthy’s seventy-hour work week:
Narayana Murthy, the former CEO and co-founder of Infosys, sparked a discussion on work-life balance when he made a comment about how to boost productivity in India. In his discussion with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Murthy stressed the need for young people to work at least seventy hours per week. He believes that in order for the nation to be competitive with countries like China and Japan, this is necessary.
“We need to increase our work productivity if we want to compete with the fastest growing countries like China and Japan,” stated Murthy. India’s workforce efficiency is currently extremely poor. The government must also shorten decision-making processes and combat bureaucratic corruption.
He said, “Our youngsters must work at least 70 hours a week.”
