A recent report from The Information has revealed that Apple’s Vision Pro headset production has been scaled back in recent months, based on input from multiple sources involved in manufacturing the device. This development follows a statement by Tim Cook during an interview with WSJ. Magazine, in which he candidly acknowledged that, while he would love to sell more units of the Vision Pro, its $3,500 price tag makes it far from a mass-market product.
This news ties in with a report from earlier this summer, suggesting that Apple has adjusted its approach, turning its attention towards creating a more affordable version of the headset, which could potentially be released as soon as next year. The shift in strategy comes amid concerns about the Vision Pro’s accessibility to a broader audience, given its high price point.
According to The Information, Luxshare, the company responsible for the final assembly of the Vision Pro headsets, has been notified that production may slow down in November. However, there is still some flexibility in this forecast—if demand for the current headset surges, production could increase again. Furthermore, future models of the headset may continue to use certain components from the current Vision Pro, albeit with improved processors to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Back in April, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple had lowered its Vision Pro shipment projections for 2024 to somewhere between 400,000 and 450,000 units. The recent report supports this notion, with a Luxshare employee indicating that the company has already produced between 500,000 and 600,000 headsets since manufacturing began last year. This suggests that Apple may have built up sufficient stock to meet current demand for the time being.
As Tim Cook highlighted, the Vision Pro is very much an early-adopter product right now, catering to those eager to experience cutting-edge technology. Nevertheless, many potential buyers may be holding out for a more affordable model, which Apple is reportedly working on to better position itself in the market.
