WhatsApp video calls have become a preferred communication method, and Google is now working on integrating this functionality directly into its Messages app. This new feature aims to allow users to make WhatsApp video calls seamlessly from within the app, eliminating the need to switch between different applications. Reports indicate that this integration is designed to enhance convenience, making video calling a smoother experience than ever before.

According to findings within the app’s code, this feature is currently in development and is expected to provide users with an alternative video-calling option, particularly when Google Meet is not installed on their device. At present, Google Messages only supports video calls via Google Meet, and users without the app are prompted to download it before initiating a call. However, with this upcoming functionality, users will be able to make WhatsApp video calls directly without leaving Google Messages.

A report from Android Authority reveals that the WhatsApp video calling feature was discovered in Google Messages version 20250131, where a hidden flag in the code was enabled. However, the feature is not yet publicly accessible, as Google has not officially announced its availability.

Shared screenshots provide insight into how this integration may work. When a user taps the video call icon in a conversation, a prompt appears suggesting a video call through WhatsApp—provided that Google Meet is not installed on the device. Unlike traditional video calls that redirect users to an external app, this new capability will open the WhatsApp video call interface directly within Google Messages in full-screen mode, making the transition effortless.

It is important to note that this feature is currently designed for one-on-one conversations. Group video calls will still be routed through Google Meet, and if the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, the option to make a WhatsApp video call will not be available.

Since Google has not yet confirmed this update officially, the final rollout might look different from what has been discovered so far. If implemented successfully, this feature could offer a significant upgrade for users who rely on Google Messages for texting while preferring WhatsApp for video communication.
