YouTube launched an AI-generated music experiment last year, enabling a few American producers to create songs with voices from celebrities including Troye Sivan, Charli XCX, Charlie Puth, John Legend, Sia, and T-Pain. Now, the platform is expanding its AI music capabilities by introducing a new feature to its Dream Track toolset. This addition lets creators remix tracks by describing how they want to alter the song’s style.
As part of this experimental feature, YouTube is offering a limited selection of songs for creators to remix. Participants in the test can select the “Restyle a track” option and provide a brief description of the changes they envision. Based on this input, the tool generates a 30-second customized snippet that creators can incorporate into YouTube Shorts.
According to YouTube’s update, users can transform a song’s genre or mood by entering their preferences into the “Restyle a track” prompt. The tool then reimagines the music, retaining the original song’s essence, including its lyrics and vocals.
To ensure transparency and proper attribution, these remixed tracks will credit the original song within the Short and on the Shorts audio pivot page. Additionally, remixed content will carry an AI-generated label to clearly distinguish it from unmodified tracks.
The Dream Track toolset, first introduced in November, leverages the Lyria music generation model developed by DeepMind. It also includes features like a tool that allows users to create tracks simply by humming.
YouTube declared in August that it would pay artists and rights holders for the use of their work in these AI-powered services in response to concerns raised by the music industry. In line with this, YouTube partnered with Universal Music Group (UMG) to establish a payment structure for rights holders.
Meanwhile, YouTube isn’t alone in this space. Gaurav Sharma, formerly of JioSaavn, is working on an app called Hook, which enables users to remix songs for short video creation, signaling growing interest in AI-driven music innovation.
