Samsung may dominate the foldable smartphone market, but it’s Huawei that made headlines by introducing the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. According to a report from ZDNet Korea, Samsung is gearing up to unveil its own tri-fold device in 2025, with a global release planned. This sets it apart from Huawei’s Mate XS Ultimate Edition, which is currently only available in China.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, most foldable smartphones fold once, while a tri-fold, despite its name, actually folds twice. This unique design offers the versatility of three different configurations: a standard smartphone, a mini tablet, and a full-sized tablet. This adaptability could make tri-fold devices a game-changer in the foldable market, providing users with unprecedented flexibility in how they use their devices.

At present, Samsung is reportedly developing two new foldable models. One will be a more affordable clamshell-style foldable, which could be the company’s least expensive foldable yet. The other, and likely the pricier of the two, will be the highly anticipated tri-fold. This could become Samsung’s most premium offering in its foldable lineup, pushing the boundaries of mobile technology and design.

While Huawei was the first to bring a tri-fold to market, Samsung has been experimenting with similar technology for some time. The company showcased multiple prototypes of tri-fold devices at CES in 2022, including foldables capable of folding in both directions. Although details on Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold are still under wraps, it is expected to follow the company’s trend of delivering flagship-quality devices. It will likely feature high-end specifications and be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Additionally, it could be one of the first foldables to run OneUI 7, based on Android 15, enhancing the user experience with Samsung’s latest software innovations.

Given that the price of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 already exceeds $2,000, the tri-fold is anticipated to come with an even higher price tag, possibly surpassing Rs 2,00,000 in India. Though we await more concrete details on the device’s features and specifications, the forthcoming tri-fold is shaping up to be one of the most exciting releases in the foldable smartphone market, further solidifying Samsung’s leadership in this evolving tech space.
