In order to maintain phones for a much longer period of time, Android smartphone manufacturers have improved their software update practices. Thus, consumers of phones will not have to replace them with new models for a very long time. Software updates will provide new functionality to the devices. Unfortunately, the battery is one of the first parts of a phone’s hardware to deteriorate, and it’s difficult to verify the battery life on an Android phone. In an effort to help users determine whether to replace their aged batteries, Google is working to make it simpler to monitor the status of your battery.
Google is attempting to provide Android with battery health information.
Google has developed a framework with Android 14 to monitor long-term battery statistics, including dates of battery manufacturing and charge cycles. Google gave Pixel smartphones running Android 14 a new “Battery Information” tab with the Pixel Feature Drop update that was launched in December 2023. Settings » About phone » Battery information is where you may get it. It displays the phone’s battery’s manufacturing date and charge cycle count, as reported by Android Authority and Mishaal Rahman.
The data that appears on this page is obtained through the Android 14 APIs. Google has included the battery health percentage with the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 update, which is available for Pixel smartphones and tablets, even though it isn’t displayed on this page. Users can view the estimated battery health % in Settings » Battery > Battery Health. In comparison to its initial full charge capacity, this is the battery’s current full charge capacity.
A phone can only charge to 4,500mAh if it is fully charged, for instance, if its rated battery charge capacity is 5,000mAh and its current charge capacity is listed at 90%. Although Google is still testing it, the new page may soon show actual charge capacity when the Android 15 update rolls along. And Samsung’s One UI 7.0 update, which is based on Android 15, may deliver the same information to its Galaxy devices.
This page will show the “estimated percentage of charge the battery can currently hold compared to when it was new,” according to strings found in the pertinent code, and the recalibration “process may take a few weeks.” The phone may need to recalibrate if it gathers enough information following its initial boot to show the battery health. Additionally, the Settings app will display specific messages informing users when the battery needs to be replaced or when it is time for calibration.
Additionally, according to reports, Google is providing Android with other battery information, such as the product number and serial number. Three values are possible: Unsupported, Replaced, and Original. According to the original, this is the battery that came with the device. Replaced may suggest that a newer battery has been installed in place of the device’s original one, but Unsupported may indicate that the phone is unable to distinguish between the two batteries. When the Android 15 update is revealed early next year, at least a few of these new capabilities may be included.
