With limited-edition specials in the USA and Canada, the BMW X5 recently commemorated its 25th anniversary. BMW’s local business, however, has taken a different approach and introduced the Dark Flame Limited Edition for China rather than merely rebranding the same vehicle.
The 2023 release of the facelifted, long-wheelbase X5 is the foundation for this China-specific Dark Flame edition. With its Sapphire Blue exterior and contrasting Titan Gold embellishments, it heavily leans toward a dramatic, dark style. These gold accents decorate the side gills, the intakes on the front bumper, the illuminated kidney grille, and the windows. The Titan Gold finish is even extended to the tailgate badging.
The SUV is equipped with M-branded brake calipers and 22-inch black-finished alloy wheels. The dual exhaust pipes’ dark finish, the smoked black taillights, and the Dark Flame designs on the puddle lights are further stylish features.
Not only does the extended X5 Li appear larger, it actually is. With an enlarged wheelbase of 3,105 mm (122.2 inches) and a length of 5,060 mm (199.2 inches), this variant is comparable to BMW’s larger models, such as the X7 and XM.
A dark grey Alcantara headliner encircles the standard “starry sky” panoramic sunroof, and BMW selected black Sensafin premium soft synthetic leather upholstery for the seats. The dashboard and center console include carbon fiber accents, and the interior is dark with gold contrasting stitching.
A four-zone climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a curved digital cockpit are just a few examples of the high caliber of equipment. Lastly, the cup holder, the front seatbacks, and the side sills that are lighted all have the Dark Flame insignia.
Based on the xDrive40Li, the special model boasts a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged mild-hybrid engine that generates 375 horsepower (280 kW/381) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. All four wheels receive power through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes M Sport brakes, M Sport exhaust, and adaptive dual-axle air suspension.
Only 1,000 of the BMW X5 xDrive40 Li Exclusive Dark Flame Edition will be produced, and it costs a cool 830,000 yuan (about $116,500) in China. This sticker puts it 30,000 yuan ($4,200) more expensive than the Night Edition and 101,000 yuan ($14,200) more expensive than the M Sport Package trim with the same engine and transmission combination.
