Inside Out 2 is smashing it at the box office on Friday after making a happy $13 million on Thursday night previews. This is far more than anticipated, and it puts the film on track to become the first 2024 release to gross $100 million in its opening weekend.

The Pixar and Disney picture is now predicted to open to at least $130 million in North America due to the high volume of traffic. This would place it among the top five openings of all time for an animated film, not accounting for inflation.

The top animated opening of 2018 is held by fellow Pixar film Incredibles 2 ($182.7 million), which is followed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Universal ($146.4 million), Finding Dory ($135.1 million) from Pixar, and Frozen II ($130.3 million) from Walt Disney Animation.

Inside Out 2’s $13 million preview revenue is the highest of the year, which is a much-needed victory for the struggling box office. The $13 million also outperformed animated tentpoles including Pixar’s Toy Story 4 ($12 million) and Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($10.8 million). The three-day domestic openers for those two movies were $107 million and $120.9 million, respectively.

Excitement is also being generated abroad by Pixar’s animated tentpole, which debuted midweek. It brought in an astounding $22.3 million from 31 marketplaces on Wednesday and Thursday. It’s putting up strong numbers in a lot of areas, including Latin America, where it opened as one of the best openings ever for an animated movie. Likewise for a few markets in Asia and Europe.

The National Research Group, the industry’s top tracking firm for Hollywood, increased its prediction for Inside Out 2’s domestic opening weekend from $85 million to $90 million on Thursday.

Based on Thursday’s preview number, the projection has grown even further.

After years of turmoil, particularly when the prior Disney administration chose to release three Pixar movies directly into streaming services, Inside Out 2 might be the cure for the studio.

With a 93 percent critics’ score and a 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the picture is currently one of the top five Pixar films. It is also receiving excellent reviews. The sequel, which was directed by Kelsey Mann, features an entirely new cast of emotions that are brought into “head” office when Riley, the story’s child heroine, reaches adolescence.

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren’t so sure how to feel about the arrival of Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. Amy Poehler leads a voice cast that also includes Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Paul Walter Hauser and Yvette Nicole Brown.
