Amazon is apparently planning to start charging a premium charge for Alexa as early as this summer, as AI upends the voice assistant industry.
According to Business Insider, Amazon intends to use artificial intelligence (AI) to update Alexa this year, releasing the new assistant as a paid product in the upcoming months. With the base technology known as “Remarkable Alexa,” hundreds of consumers are reportedly already participating in testing for the new service, which is now branded “Alexa Plus.” It might launch as early as June 30.
According to unnamed Amazon employees in the paper, this new version of Alexa excels at having conversations but struggles to perform any truly helpful tasks. Responses are allegedly quite drawn out and frequently erroneous, and AI “hallucinations” also seem to be rather regular. It seems that multi-step queries interacting with various backend services are a significant source of frustration. Internal conflict appears to stem from long-time Alexa staffers pressuring Amazon to maintain parts of the original product, which is allegedly “bloating” the updated version.
Employees are putting pressure on Amazon to postpone the launch as a result, and many don’t think users will be ready to pay for the service.
However, given that Alexa is supposedly a financial loss for the corporation, it is not shocking that Amazon wants to start charging for the voice assistant. It is completely reasonable to consider charging a price for these kinds of things, as AI is even more expensive. However, if the accounts from these employees are true, it seems like Amazon would be better off waiting until things, well, work out.
