Egyptian poet and essayist Gamila El Alaily is the subject of the present Google Doodle, which celebrates what might have been El Alaily’s 112th birthday celebration.

Conceived in 1907 in Mansoura, Dakahlia, El Alaily moved to Cairo as a young woman and started contributing poems to the all around regarded artistic journal Apollo. She later turned into the main female individual from the Apollo Society, a gathering of modernist writers and artists situated in Cairo, and is viewed as a key figure in Egypt’s modern art renaissance.
