HMD has made an intriguing new smartphone announcement at IFA 2024. The HMD Fusion, the company’s newest gadget, has an innovative modular design. New Smart Outfits, which are custom cases that combine style and usefulness, were launched alongside this model.
1. HMD Fusion: What distinguishes it?
Both the HMD Fusion and the HMD Crest (review) have a striking resemblance. Like the Skyline and Crest, the Fusion is designed to be easily repaired. With iFixit, users can easily fix the display, back cover, charging port, and battery. However, the Fusion’s modular design is what makes it unique. A six-pin connector on the back enables it to utilize unique cases that HMD refers to as “Smart Outfits.”
Overall, the design resembles the Moto Mods quite a bit. However, HMD is adding a new twist to these scenarios because each Outfit modifies the program in addition to adding a new feature. Users can access new software and hardware features on their phones by snapping on a new case. According to HMD, specific circumstances open up new interfaces and improved functionality.
This includes a flashy outfit that uses a new camera effect on the camera app to add a ring light around the front and rear cameras. An IP8 designation for water and dust resistance adds even more protection to a Rugged Outfit. In addition, the case has an ICE button for emergencies, and users can even wirelessly charge their devices. There’s also the Casual Outfit, a chic case with a minimalist design and available in several colors.
2. Specifications
The 6.56-inch HD+ LCD display on the HMD Fusion has a peak brightness of 600 nits and a refresh rate of 90Hz. Its Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC powers it, along with 128GB of internal storage that can be upgraded by up to 1TB using a microSD card slot and up to 12GB of RAM. This model has a sizable 5,000mAh battery capacity that enables 33W wired fast charging and is powered by the Android 14 operating system.
In terms of optics, there is a 50-megapixel selfie camera on the front and a 108-megapixel dual camera arrangement on the back. An IP54 rating, a fingerprint scanner located on the side, dual SIM, Bluetooth 5.1, and a USB Type-C connector are some of the other noteworthy features.
3. Price
The HMD Fusion, which costs 249 euros, was only revealed in one color option: black. The date of release is still pending. Later this year, the Gaming, Rugged, Wireless, and Flashy Outfits will be offered for sale individually, with prices ranging from 39 to 99 euros.
