Thousands of people were unable to access Meta’s platforms on Tuesday, including Facebook and Instagram, due to what the firm described as a “technical issue.” Two hours or so were spent fixing the outage.
As of Tuesday morning, Eastern Time, up to 500,000 Facebook users had reported difficulties getting on or accessing the website, according to outage tracker Downdetector. About 50,000 reports of outages had been made for Instagram, and another 10,000 for Facebook Messenger; however, within an hour of starting, the number of reports had started to decline.
A few people discovered that their Facebook accounts had been logged out. Some users of Instagram received messages stating that “something went wrong” and that their feeds were not loading.
Elon Musk’s rival site, Threads, was shut down as well, replacing its feed with a popup that stated, “Something went wrong, please try again later.”
On Tuesday, Meta’s status page reported “major disruptions” affecting the Facebook login process and a few other platform features.
“We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on Tuesday.
Less than 80,000 users were reporting problems with Facebook about 45 minutes after the outage complaints began to accumulate, according to Downdetector. Reports concerning Messenger and Instagram had also abruptly decreased. Since Downdetector only counts users who report problems, there are probably more users actually impacted than what is shown.
Meta announced that the problem has been fixed shortly after noon ET.
“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services,” Stone said on X. “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Although they occur sporadically, major platform outages usually stem from a benign cause, such a software update issue. In 2021, the companies Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp experienced a nearly six-hour outage, which they assured consumers was not caused by hostile activity.
“We are aware of availability issues affecting certain services provided by Meta. At this time we are not aware of specific malicious cyber activity or any specific nexus to today’s elections,” a spokesperson for the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency told Tuesday, referencing Tuesday’s Super Tuesday primary elections.
After AT&T suffered a nearly 12-hour network outage late last month that left many customers momentarily unable to make calls, send messages, or access the internet from their mobile devices, service interruptions are still fresh in the memories of many users.
