Due to an early Play Store listing that shows local connections and more, Google Wallet appears to be headed for India.
The announcement that the GPay app will no longer be available in the US is the latest change to Google’s on-device payment strategy. However, Google first released Wallet, a straightforward software that handled your NFC passes, credit cards, and other items. A few regions did not see the app’s launch in 2022.
It seems that Google Wallet is now heading towards India.
The Google Play Store listing for Google Wallet briefly featured a number of well-known Indian-only businesses, including SBI (State Bank of India), Air India, and the Indian movie theater chain PVR INOX.
Although the listing has subsequently been updated to remove the promotional graphics, there are still other indications that the software may be making its way to India.
Google Wallet is now functional for users in India when the app is installed using a direct link or sideloading from the Play Store, according to observations made by Beebom and other observers. Although local loyalty schemes, as hinted at in the Play Store description, do not yet function, cards still function.
In order to meet the “unique needs in those countries,” Google previously stated that Google Pay will remain available in Singapore and India. However, it appears the company is still working to extend its Wallet experience to at least India in addition to that app.
