Customers who pre-purchase the Vision Pro beginning on January 19 will need to use Face ID on an iPhone or iPad to scan their faces in order to ensure an exact band fit on the headset, according to an email sent by Apple today to its customers. On February 2, when it launches, deliveries will start. The headset will be available for purchase in US retail stores, on apple.com, and through the Apple Store app.
According to Apple, customers will need to use the most recent version of the Apple Store app in order to do a facial scan. It will also be possible to add optical inserts to the headset so that it can be worn without glasses for those who wear them. When pre-ordering the headset, Apple says customers will need to share an updated certified prescription document in order to receive the inserts, which are offered by its partner Zeiss and come with an additional cost.
If you’re not sure whether to buy the Vision Pro—which starts at roughly $3,499—Apple has stated that you can test the headset in-store on launch day. During a hands-on preview, the Vision Pro—which was initially unveiled during Apple’s WWDC 2023 keynote—was praised for its clear 3D images. In the future, the headgear will serve as a tool for establishing friendships among friends in Horizon Worlds in addition to serving as a VR screen and speaker system for viewing movies and playing games.
The ability to go freely across a virtual environment with an integrated gaming application created by Meta will challenge preconceived notions about what internet gaming and social networking are today. Apple’s insistence on branding the Vision Pro as a spatial computer will open up countless opportunities for developers to produce engaging applications.
