Gemini, previously integrated into the Google (Search) app for iOS, is now branching out, as a standalone “Google Gemini” app has been spotted on the App Store. This development marks a shift, offering direct access to Gemini while also introducing the Gemini Live feature for users.
The standalone app provides iPhone users with a dedicated Gemini icon on their home screen, accompanied by the tagline: “Unlock the power of Google AI on your iPhone”. Previously, accessing Gemini required opening the Google app and navigating to the Gemini tab. In September, the Google app widget was updated to include customizable shortcuts, allowing quicker access to Gemini with a single tap.
The newly listed app includes functionality for Gemini Live, a feature not yet available within the Google app. Early users of the standalone version have reported experiencing a voice-based interaction system. The app utilizes Live Activity to stay operational even while users engage with other tasks on their phones, adding to its convenience.
Currently, the app has been downloaded by at least one user in the Philippines. However, it remains inaccessible in other regions, such as the US, where the App Store shows a notification stating, “This app is not available in your country or region at this time”. Google appears to be testing the app in select markets before rolling it out on a wider scale.
In terms of features, Gemini in the Google app offers functionality comparable to that of gemini.google.com. However, the interface on iOS has yet to match the streamlined experience provided on Android. The introduction of a standalone app could pave the way for quicker updates and better usability.
Similar to Google Assistant, which functions as a separate app on iOS, this move underscores Google’s dedication to refining its AI tools for iPhone users. The standalone Gemini app promises enhanced accessibility and user-friendliness, pointing toward a more robust AI experience in future updates.
