For a small crossover that will go on sale later this year in regions where the German brand is present, Opel has brought back the Frontera moniker. The crossover will take the place of the Crossland.

The last time Opel offered an Isuzu rebadged as the Frontera was in the 1990s, but the current Frontera has a distinctive look, even if it is built on the same chassis as a number of other Stellantis models.

A less expensive version of Stellantis’ CMP platform serves as those foundations. The CMP platform is intended for subcompact and tiny cars and is compatible with electric and mild hybrid drivetrains. The platform may be found in the subcompact Opel Mokka and Corsa, as well as in the siblings Alfa Romeo Junior, Fiat 600, and Jeep Avenger.

The Smart Car Platform is a low-cost platform that was created in partnership with Tata Consulting. Approximately 90% of the platform’s components are acquired from low-cost nations in an effort to reduce prices, as reported by Reuters in the fall.

Electric or mildly hybrid drivetrains will be available for the Frontera. Opel is holding off on releasing all the details until closer to the vehicle’s launch, but based on other CMP-based cars, the mildly hybrid powertrain will probably use a 1.2-liter turbocharged inline-3 and produce about 99 horsepower, while the electric option will probably have a 54-kwh battery and a single, 156-horsepower motor at the front axle. It might come with a 44-kwh battery as standard.

In the subcompact crossover market, Opel already has the Mokka available, and it too has an electric variant. The Frontera is a roomier, boxier substitute, nevertheless. When the back seats are folded, the storage capacity increases to 56.0 cubic feet. The gauge cluster and touchscreen entertainment system are housed in a pair of 10.0-inch digital panels on the dash, which has a straightforward appearance at the front of the cabin. There are numerous USB ports and a wireless phone charger provided.

Later this year, Opel will begin selling a revamped Grandland compact crossover. Based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform is the new Grandland.
