Google Fiber unveiled a new, absurdly fast Internet service option in October: 20Gbps symmetrical. We were unaware of the cost, even though it is 1,000 times faster than what other Internet providers provide (particularly when it comes to upload speeds). Who is eligible for this new service is disclosed in a recent blog post, and the monthly cost is $250.

According to Google, “We’re starting in Kansas City, North Carolina’s Triangle Region, Arizona, and Iowa.” According to Google, the “Triangle Region” consists of Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and Durham. Since Google Fiber is based on Nokia’s upgradeable “Quillion” Fiber platform, it can send more data over current fiber lines by converting to the newest 25G PON (passive optical network) technology. Google claims that more locations will be able to get 20-gig bandwidth as it completes more enhancements. In October of last year, Nick Saporito, the head of product at Google Fiber, stated to Fierce Telecom that 20-gig service will be available “in most, if not all, of our markets.”

The cost of current fiber plans will not change, but a new pricing tier called 20-gig will start at $250 per month. 20-gig installations will begin in Q1 of 2024. That translates to $70 for 1 gig, $100 for 2 gig, $125 for 5 gig, and $150 for 8 gig.
