The Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung’s newest top smartphone, was announced earlier this month. The Galaxy S24 Ultra goes on sale globally on January 31, but reviewers and influencers have already received their hands on one. That means it’s time to find out, with Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything, just how sturdy this year’s Ultra smartphone is.
The changes Samsung made to the Galaxy S24 Ultra this year may make Nelson’s durability test even more crucial. It is composed, in part, of titanium. Nelson discovered that the OnePlus Open’s design didn’t really use a lot of titanium alloy, so it is something to keep an eye on. Upon disassembling the foldable, he discovered that the only titanium screws were those in the hinge.
Fortunately, it seems that Samsung is being more truthful when it comes to the titanium frame of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The frame is titanium, but the power and volume buttons are not. It won’t scratch as easily as an aluminum frame because of this. But if it comes into contact with things that are harder, it will still scrape.
particularly interested in learning how the Galaxy S24 Ultra performs in Nelson’s scratch test given both Samsung and Corning have made audacious statements regarding the phone’s cover material. The S24 Ultra employs a novel material called Gorilla Armor in place of Corning’s standard Gorilla Glass. The only proof of its purported increased scratch resistance and less reflection to far comes from an internal test conducted by Corning.
The scratch resistance of Gorilla Armor is now more independently measurable thanks to the JerryRigEverything test. Upon initial observation, the Galaxy S24 Ultra appeared to have a minor scratch on the Moh Scale of Hardness. However, it turned out not to be the case after closer examination with Nelson’s tiny camera. Nelson believes that rather than harming the glass, the substance from his pick rubbed off on it.
Accordingly, the Moh Scale of Hardness places the Galaxy S24 Ultra at level seven, meaning that deeper grooves will become visible at level eight. For comparison, Nelson’s test indicates that a lot of smartphones, even those with Gorilla Glass, scratch at level six. Consequently, it seems that the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Gorilla Armor is more resilient to micro-scratches than any other phone available.
Not to mention that the smartphone has an IP68 water and resistance rating, meaning it may be submerged for short periods of time in freshwater bodies that are shallow.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra aced the durability test, demonstrating the real impact of the new titanium finish and Gorilla Armor cover material.
