Earlier this year, Huawei introduced the Mate XT in China, marking the debut of the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. This innovation has inspired other manufacturers like Oppo and Tecno to reveal their concepts for triple-folding devices, with reports suggesting that Samsung could join the trend by 2026.
In a new development, a recently filed patent by Honor, published by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), reveals the company’s work on a smartphone featuring a sliding display. According to IT Home, a Chinese publication that first noticed the patent, the design incorporates a support structure that functions as a hinge for the sliding mechanism.
The patent outlines the potential use of a scissor-like mechanism with interlinked folding supports arranged in an X-shaped configuration. This setup would enable the screen to extend or retract, potentially powered by a linear motor. The design consists of two parts: a stationary display and a movable sliding screen. These are reportedly connected using flexible elastic beams to minimize stress on the screen during operation.
Though still in the conceptual phase, a sliding display design offers notable advantages over traditional folding phones. Foldable devices, where the screens close against each other, often struggle with durability issues, as small gaps between the screens can allow dust and debris to accumulate, eventually harming the display. In contrast, if Honor integrates the sliding mechanism within the device itself, it could be better protected against dirt and grime.
Additionally, a sliding display offers practical benefits. Users would have the flexibility to extend the screen when needed, enhancing multitasking, content consumption, and editing tasks. This approach could make the device more versatile while addressing some of the durability concerns associated with foldable designs.
As with many patents, it’s unclear whether this technology will be commercialized. There’s no confirmation that Honor is actively developing a sliding smartphone, and it could take years for such devices to become a reality. Until then, the idea remains an intriguing glimpse into the potential future of smartphone innovation.
