Top seed Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open in a foreboding manner on Monday, crushing Russian Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-3 6-4 to maintain his calm progress.

The Italian made light work of the Court Philippe Chatrier night encounter by ruthlessly efficient from the baseline and stunningly dissecting world number 15 Rublev’s game.

Sinner won the Australian Open this January and the U.S. Open last September, making him a three-time major champion. On Wednesday, he will take on 62nd-ranked Alexander Bublik in an attempt to get to the Roland-Garros semifinals for the second year in a row.

The 23-year-old, who is vying for a third consecutive Grand Slam title following his victories in Melbourne and New York, has won 12 of 12 sets on the Paris clay so far and is starting to appear unstoppable in his pursuit of his maiden French trophy.

Rublev did not play poorly, but he was unable to leave much of an impression as he was unable to convert either of his two break points in the first game.

Rublev threw caution to the wind, pushing world number one Sinner hard in the third set, but he jumped to break the Russian’s serve in the tenth game to extend his Grand Slam winning streak to eighteen games.

Rublev had already defeated Sinner twice, including last year, and again at the same stage of the French Open in 2022, though Sinner had withdrawn injured.

But this time, Sinner’s ground strokes were so precise and fierce that the Russian was frantically trying to hold onto his opponent’s coat tails.

In the first game, there appeared to be a contest as Rublev hammered home a forehand winner to put Sinner behind 15–40. Before giving the evening audience a lecture, the Italian, however, batted away that early danger.

In the first set, he only made three unforced mistakes, and in the second, he let up only a couple more while hardly seeming to be perspiring.

The match was already on its way to its inevitable end when Sinner had to save just one more break point, at 2-2 in the third set.
