Apple introduced its first mixed-reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, at last year’s WWDC, and the company is now focusing on enhancing its capabilities, particularly for gaming. According to reports, Apple and Sony are collaborating to incorporate third-party VR hand controllers into the visionOS software of the Vision Pro. Beyond gaming, these controllers are expected to improve productivity and media editing tasks within the operating system. However, no specific timeline for the launch of this collaboration has been revealed. Controllers for the Xbox and PlayStation 5 are currently compatible with the Vision Pro.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that Apple is actively collaborating with Sony to bring PlayStation VR2 Sense controller compatibility to the Vision Pro. Apple reportedly initiated discussions with Sony earlier this year, with the latter dedicating several months to the project. Gurman also mentioned that Apple has engaged with third-party developers, encouraging them to incorporate PlayStation VR2 controller support into their games.

Initially, Apple and Sony intended to announce the controller compatibility a few weeks ago but have delayed the rollout. These advanced controllers could go beyond gaming applications, providing precise control for navigating visionOS and enhancing creative workflows in professional tools like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Once the integration is complete, the controllers are expected to be available through Apple’s online store and retail outlets.

Apple has also reportedly been experimenting with a prototype “wand” for the Vision Pro, a device aimed at offering precise input for tasks rather than gaming. Although the PS5 and Xbox controllers are already compatible with the Vision Pro, they do not have the sophisticated six degrees of freedom (6DOF) functionality needed for complex virtual reality gameplay.

The Vision Pro, which supports both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) and operates on the visionOS platform, debuted at a price of $3,499 (approximately ₹2,90,000). It is powered by Apple’s M2 processor and a specialized R1 chip and comes with storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The device is currently on sale in select markets, including the US, China, Europe, and Japan. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly planning a more affordable version of the Vision Pro for early next year, potentially priced around $2,000 (approximately ₹1,68,000). This model is expected to feature less powerful hardware and cost-effective materials.
