Samsung appears to be gearing up for significant changes with its upcoming foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. According to a report by Jukanlosreve from ET News, the South Korean tech giant is considering removing the conventional S Pen to enhance portability and reduce the device’s overall thickness. This move could make the new Fold approximately 0.6mm thinner, bringing it closer to the coveted sub-10mm range when folded. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 currently measures 12.2mm, while the special edition Galaxy Z Fold SE, available in certain Asian markets, already boasts a slimmer 10.6mm profile.
However, this shift does not necessarily mark the end of the S Pen experience in Samsung’s premium foldable series. Reports indicate that the company is working on a redesigned stylus that functions similarly to the Apple Pencil, interacting with the device through an electrical field rather than relying on an in-built digitiser within the display. This modification could allow Samsung to retain stylus support without compromising on design improvements.
On the display front, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to feature an upgraded 8-inch internal screen, an increase from the 7.6-inch panel found on its predecessor. The cover screen may also see an expansion to 6.5 inches, aligning with the dimensions of the Z Fold SE. However, the device is likely to retain the same M13 OLED panel as the previous generation, meaning users may not see a dramatic improvement in brightness or display quality.
Interestingly, this development coincides with recent consumer dissatisfaction over the lack of Bluetooth connectivity in the S Pen for the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra, hinting that Samsung is re-evaluating its stylus technology across its product lineup. The brand’s efforts to create a slimmer foldable come as competition in the market heats up, with rivals like Oppo launching sleek alternatives such as the Find N5, which measures just 8.93mm when folded. With the Galaxy Z Fold 7 expected to be unveiled in August, pricing remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, Samsung is also reportedly working on its first tri-fold smartphone, which could potentially make its debut in 2025.
