Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has unveiled its latest flagship model, Grok 3, along with enhanced capabilities for its Grok iOS and web apps. Positioned as a rival to OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini, Grok 3 introduces new image analysis features and powers various tools on Musk’s social platform, X. Initially expected in 2024, the model’s release was delayed but has now begun rolling out.
Developed using a massive Memphis-based data center with 200,000 GPUs, Grok 3 was trained with “10x” more computational power than its predecessor, Grok 2. Musk, during a live-streamed event, described it as a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” emphasizing its ability to present facts without political bias. The model reportedly incorporates an expanded dataset, including legal filings, to enhance its knowledge base.
The Grok 3 lineup consists of multiple versions, including Grok 3 mini, a lighter model that prioritizes speed over accuracy. While some features remain in beta, xAI claims Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4o on benchmarks such as AIME, which evaluates math proficiency, and GPQA, which tests advanced scientific reasoning. The model also ranks competitively in the Chatbot Arena, where users assess AI capabilities in head-to-head comparisons.
Additionally, xAI has introduced specialized reasoning models, Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, designed to self-verify responses before delivering answers. These models are particularly suited for complex subjects like mathematics, science, and programming. A new feature, DeepSearch, enhances Grok’s ability to scan the internet and X for real-time data, similar to OpenAI’s research tools.
Access to Grok 3 is initially available to X’s Premium+ subscribers at $50 per month, while advanced features will be part of the SuperGrok plan, expected to cost $30 per month or $300 annually. This tier offers enhanced reasoning capabilities, additional DeepSearch queries, and unlimited image generation. In the coming weeks, xAI plans to introduce voice synthesis to Grok, followed by enterprise API access for businesses.
Musk has also announced plans to open-source Grok 2 once Grok 3 reaches stability, continuing xAI’s approach of releasing older versions to the public. While Grok initially positioned itself as an “anti-woke” AI willing to tackle controversial topics, earlier versions still exhibited political leanings. Musk aims to make Grok more neutral, though it remains to be seen whether xAI has successfully achieved this objective.
