Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya helped the Mumbai Indians post a respectable 184 for seven in Monday’s Indian Premier League penultimate league encounter, despite Punjab Kings’ disciplined bowling display. Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer chose to field first in a stadium that frequently records 200-plus runs in the opening innings of the season, while both teams were fighting for a top-two finish on the points table.

Continuing his superb form in the tournament, Suryakumar Yadav struck a fluent 57 off 39 deliveries and, in the process, surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record of 618 runs from IPL 2010 to become Mumbai Indians’ highest run scorer in a single season, with 628 runs so far in IPL 2025. Opener Ryan Rickelton got Mumbai off to a decent start with 27 off 20 balls, showcasing some elegant strokeplay, helping his side reach 52 for one by the end of the powerplay.

Arshdeep Singh created early trouble with his ability to move the ball both ways, testing Rickelton thoroughly in the opening over. In the next over, Rickelton cashed in on a few loose deliveries from Kyle Jamieson, who was featuring in his first match for Punjab Kings. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma took some time to settle in, but a lofted shot over mid-off against Marco Jansen sparked some momentum for him. However, Jansen, playing his last game of the season, dismissed Rickelton with a mistimed shot that was caught at mid-on in the sixth over.

Harpreet Brar, stepping up in the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal, continued to be effective in the middle overs, taking the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma with a well-judged catch by Nehal Wadhera at long-on. Punjab Kings seemed to have tightened their grip on the match in the thirteenth over, when they were 106 for four against the Mumbai Indians.

Hardik Pandya narrowly escaped dismissal on the first legal delivery he faced when Vijaykumar Vyshak failed to hold on to a straightforward return catch. Vyshak swiftly dismissed Will Jacks and Tilak Varma to make apologies in the midst of the innings, demonstrating the effectiveness of his wide line strategy.

Momentum shifted again towards Mumbai Indians during the 19th over, when Vyshak, who had been impressive until then, conceded 23 runs. Naman Dhir, who contributed a quick 20 off 12 balls, and Suryakumar’s barrage of boundaries provided the innings with much-needed late momentum. Arshdeep Singh capped off the innings on a high note for Punjab, delivering a brilliant final over in which he conceded only three runs and picked up two wickets, preventing a bigger finish for Mumbai.
