The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of the most popular cars in India, enjoying a cult-like following due to its efficiency and affordability. Even with the launch of the 4th generation Swift, the car has continued its strong sales performance. Now, there are reports suggesting that Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce a CNG variant of the Swift on September 12th.
The recently launched model is equipped with Suzuki’s new Z12E 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, a powertrain that is unique to the Swift for the time being, though more models featuring this engine are expected soon. The new CNG version is anticipated to feature the same engine, but the key detail remains unclear: the type of CNG kit Maruti Suzuki will use for this variant.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki’s S-CNG lineup is equipped with single-cylinder CNG kits. However, competitors like Tata Motors and Hyundai have introduced more advanced dual-cylinder CNG kits, which are more efficient and help to preserve more trunk space for the vehicle owners. Given that the Swift is a new model with a brand-new engine, many are hoping Maruti Suzuki will introduce a more innovative CNG solution that keeps pace with competitors. Like other S-CNG models, it is likely that the Swift CNG will be offered only in lower to mid-tier trims.
When it comes to pricing, Maruti Suzuki has traditionally charged around ₹90,000 more for its S-CNG variants compared to the petrol-only versions. This pricing strategy is expected to apply to the upcoming Swift CNG as well. However, as with most vehicles running on CNG, performance is expected to be slightly lower compared to the petrol-only variant.
The launch of the Swift CNG could further bolster Maruti Suzuki’s stronghold in the B-segment of the market. Maruti Suzuki already leads the CNG car market in India, with CNG models accounting for around 34% of its overall sales. The automaker holds a dominant 73% share of the CNG car market, but competition is increasing as rivals introduce more advanced and space-efficient CNG solutions. It will be interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki evolves its CNG offerings to maintain its position in the market.
