Google stated today that it has put an end to its trial, which sought to let new types of real-money games on the Play Store. The company cited the difficulties associated with certain regions’ lack of a central authority to authorize such apps.
The business announced in January that it would begin to broadly permit real-money apps in June in Mexico, Brazil, and India. Notably, since November 2023, Mexico has had a test program for Rummy and fantasy sports applications, while India has had one since 2022.
The company declared that it will permit the trial program’s apps to stay available on the Play Store in India.
Expanding our support for real-money gaming applications in regions lacking a central licensing framework has presented greater challenges than initially anticipated. We require additional time to ensure the best outcomes for our developer partners and the safety of our users. A spokesperson from Google emphasized in a statement that Google Play maintains a strong commitment to aiding developers in responsibly establishing new ventures and expanding their reach across diverse content types and genres.
The business went on to say that while it is working to find an appropriate structures, it would like to support real-money games on the Play Store. Additionally, Google stated that it needs more time to complete the details of a new service price structure it is still working on for these kinds of games.
Google addressed the Indian market in particular, although it did not mention any national licensing mechanism that specifies what kinds of games are permitted in the nation. Most likely, the business doesn’t want to navigate the hazardous regulatory seas. Furthermore, the establishment of a gaming industry self-regulatory organization that would have established guidelines for real money games was put on hold by India’s IT ministry last year.
