Want to avoid gaining weight in middle age? A recent study recommends avoiding starchy vegetables including potatoes, corn, and peas as well as low-quality carbs.
Published the study online on September 27, 2023. It assessed weight changes during a 28-year period in 136,432 persons 65 years of age or younger (average age 50, 83.5% women). The kind of carbohydrates that participants consumed seemed to have an impact on their ability to control their weight, even though they gained an average of more than three pounds every four years. Over a four-year period, gaining up to three pounds was linked to a daily rise of 3.5 ounces of low-quality carbs, such as sugar-sweetened drinks, refined cereals, and starchy vegetables. However, over a four-year period, a mere one-third ounce increase in the daily fiber intake of the individuals was associated with a 1.7 pounds decrease in weight gain. Those who were overweight or ladies showed very high connections.
Although eating too much sugar is bad for you, the study found that refined carbs like white bread, pasta, rice, and chips were considerably more harmful and contributed significantly to weight increase in middle life.
