With a new focus on higher-margin, lower-volume automobiles such as those sold under the Mercedes-Maybach and AMG subbrands, Mercedes-Benz announced its 2022 strategy.

Launching a new Mythos series with extremely customized limited-edition automobiles will also be part of the plan. Mercedes revealed a concept version of the first of them, called the Concept Mercedes-Benz AMG PureSpeed, with minimal shroud, ahead of its planned launch early next year.

The idea is a pure speedster, as the name implies, without a roof or windshield whatsoever. However, the inclusion of a Formula 1-style halo protection system sets the design apart from conventional speedsters. The halo, which is attached to two rollover hoops behind the seats, is intended to protect the heads of passengers by deflecting any heavy objects that might fly into the air. Airflow over the interior is further assisted by small wind deflectors, though a conventional windshield is anticipated to take their place in the production model.

The AMG One hypercar’s design, according to Mercedes, served as inspiration for the car’s more prominent nose compared to the regular SL. Additionally, there are new aerodynamic components, such as the carbon fiber wheel covers, side curtains, and expanded front splitter. While the rear wheel covers are fully closed to assist decrease turbulence, the front wheel covers are open to promote airflow to improve brake cooling and increase downforce.

Inside the prototype, Mercedes-partner watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen created a special dash-mounted clock and custom detailing.

The chassis and powertrain were kept under wraps. The current peak output of the ordinary SL in the plug-in hybrid grade SL 63 S E Performance is 805 horsepower.

Mercedes has stated that the PureSpeed concept’s commercial version would only be produced in 250 pieces. Only those clients Mercedes referred to as its “most dedicated” will be eligible for build slots.
