Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has expanded its export offerings by introducing the Exter to the South African market. This model becomes the eighth vehicle that Hyundai is exporting from India to South Africa, further strengthening its presence in this key export destination. Notably, South Africa has been a consistent and significant market for HMIL over the years.
The vehicles, including the Exter, are manufactured at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur plant located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and shipped to South Africa. The year 2024 holds special significance for HMIL as it marks 20 years of exporting vehicles to this African country. Speaking about this expansion, Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head – Corporate Planning at HMIL, expressed his optimism, stating, “‘Made in India, Made for the World’ is a testament to HMIL’s production prowess as it is clear that our products are adored by consumers worldwide in addition to the Indian market. I have no doubt that the Hyundai EXTER would enjoy great acclaim in South Africa, continuing its remarkable success and enormous appeal in India.
The first shipment of the Exter, consisting of 996 units, has already been dispatched to South Africa. The Exter now joins Hyundai’s extensive lineup in the South African market, which includes models like the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, i20, i20 N Line, Venue, Venue N Line, and Alcazar.
The Hyundai Exter, a micro-SUV developed exclusively by HMIL, has quickly gained popularity, achieving over 100,000 sales in India within just one year since its launch. In 2024, Hyundai expanded the Exter’s range by introducing the Knight Edition, as well as CNG variants featuring dual-cylinder technology.
In the Indian market, the Exter faces competition from models like the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and Citroen C3. It is powered by a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engine, available with either a five-speed manual transmission or an automatic manual transmission (AMT). Earlier this month, Hyundai introduced two new variants: the S(O)+ MT and S+ AMT, both equipped with an electric sunroof. These variants are priced at ₹7,86,300 and ₹8,43,900 (ex-showroom), respectively.
