YouTube revealed on Thursday that it is rolling out several new podcast-focused features for Premium subscribers, including an AI-driven recommendation tool, an “Auto speed” option, and a new listening mode designed for users on the move.
The latest update highlights YouTube’s continued push to attract podcast listeners and strengthen its position against rival platforms, particularly as streaming leader Netflix continues to make significant investments in video podcasts. By emphasizing personalized content discovery and hands-free listening capabilities, the company also appears to be targeting audiences that primarily consume podcasts through audio-centric platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
The Google-owned service already offers Premium subscribers its “Ask Music” feature, which enables users to create customized radio stations and playlists. Now, users will also be able to receive podcast recommendations based on specific genres, their mood at the moment, or programs they already like.
Subscribers will additionally gain access to a new “Auto speed” feature intended to improve listening efficiency by automatically adjusting playback speed during slower speech sections or content-heavy portions, resulting in a smoother experience without reducing understanding.
Although users can already modify playback speed manually, the experience can be uneven when podcast hosts speak at varying speeds or frequently shift their tone. With this new addition, listeners will be able to enjoy content at a dynamically adjusted speed that accounts for these variations throughout an episode.
The newly introduced on-the-go mode provides Premium members with listener-focused controls tailored for situations such as running, commuting, or multitasking. Users will have access to convenient controls for skipping ahead or backward, as well as moving directly to the next episode. According to YouTube, the feature is intended to help users make better use of background playback.
Auto speed and on-the-go mode are currently available to Premium subscribers on Android, with support for iOS scheduled to arrive in the coming months.
YouTube stated that Premium users watched more than 800 million hours of podcasts during April 2026 and that YouTube Podcasts has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. Through the introduction of these new capabilities, the company aims to both maintain and increase those figures.
