Following a major redesign, Google Wallet is broadening its Digital ID availability to selected regions across Europe while also introducing updates to the online Google Pay checkout experience.
The latest changes are centered on Google Wallet users in Europe. After significant Digital ID expansions in India, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom, Google is now extending the feature to the European Union. However, the company has not specified which member states will be included, noting only that the rollout will cover “select” countries.
In Europe, Digital IDs will be supported through a partnership with Sparkasse Bank to simplify identity verification. Through the bank’s verification process, users will be able to confirm details such as their age without disclosing sensitive personal information.
Google says the Digital ID feature is scheduled to begin rolling out to users sometime this summer.
The company is also updating the Google Pay checkout experience across Europe. Merchants using Airwallex and Adyen will be the first to receive the redesigned interface. The refreshed layout offers a cleaner appearance, making payment information and address details easier to review and submit without extensive data entry.
Google has also enhanced security behind the scenes by upgrading its payment authentication system. According to the company, the updated authentication process complies with European Union standards and cuts verification times by 50%.
One of the key advantages is a smoother checkout process that reduces the need for users to locate or manually enter one-time passwords (OTPs). Users in the United Kingdom and Poland are expected to gain access to the updated Google Pay experience in the coming months.
