Mahindra & Mahindra reported strong sales figures in January 2025, achieving an 18% year-on-year growth in the domestic market with 50,659 units sold. When exports are factored in, total utility vehicle sales rose to 52,306 units, while the company’s overall sales, including exports, reached 85,432 units, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year.

At a time when competitors like Hyundai and Tata Motors faced a decline in domestic sales, Mahindra registered notable growth, securing the third spot in passenger vehicle sales rankings. The automaker outperformed Tata Motors by nearly 2,600 units, as Tata’s total domestic PV sales stood at 48,316 units for January 2025.

Tata Motors witnessed an 11% year-on-year drop in overall domestic sales, while its passenger vehicle sales, including electric models, declined by 10%, slipping from 53,633 units in January 2024 to 48,076 units last month. The company also experienced a steep decline in exports, with international sales plummeting by 40%, from 400 units in January 2024 to just 240 units this year.

Tata’s electric vehicle segment was also impacted, with total EV sales, both domestic and international, decreasing by 25%. The company recorded 5,240 EV sales last month, a significant drop from the 6,979 units sold in January 2024.

Commenting on the company’s performance, Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Division at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., expressed enthusiasm over the brand’s momentum. “We had a great start to the year, selling 50,659 SUVs, which represented an 18% gain, and selling 85,432 vehicles overall, which represented a 16% increase. Our new Electric Origin SUVs, the BE6 and XEV 9E, received tremendous interest at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi. Test drives for these models began on January 14, and we are excited about their launch. Bookings for these vehicles will officially open on February 14.”

Mahindra is poised to strengthen its portfolio further with upcoming models, including the XUV 3XO, a compact electric SUV, and the XUV.e8 concept-based XEV 7e, which are expected to hit the market in the near future.
